MUMIA'S LIFE IS ON THE LINE: A CALL TO DIRECT ACTION
Time is running out for Mumia Abu-Jamal. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has denied his final appeal. While Mumia's lawyers are now taking his case to the federal courts, his chances there are slim, thanks to President Clinton's 1996 Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, which drastically limits the federal courts' powers to review death cases. Mumia's only hope for a new and fair trial is if we can mobilize a bigger, broader, stronger, louder, more determined movement.
On Saturday, July 3, the anniversary of Mumia's death sentence, International Concerned Friends and Family of Mumia is calling for civil disobedience at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. Here in San Francisco, an Independence for Mumia Day legal procession will gather at the Federal Building at noon, proceed to Union Square, and end with a direct action. We are hoping for at least 100 people to participate in the direct action and many more in the legal procession.
15,000 people marched in San Francisco in support of Mumia on April 24. International Concerned Friends and Family of Mumia is calling on us to up the ante through direct action, and we know we can make a significant contribution to this in the Bay Area. When Mumia was scheduled for execution in 1995, the mass arrest of 300 torchlight demonstrators in San Francisco inspired Mumia's supporters across the country. When the U.S. went to war in the Persian Gulf in 1991, 2,000 people were arrested for protesting, more than half of the protest arrests nationally.
We can make a difference by showing that people are willing to put their bodies on the line and that there will be no peace if Mumia is killed.
FireWorx and other groups and individuals have formed a coalition, Direct Action for Mumia Abu-Jamal, which is planning a campaign of direct action and legal demonstrations over the next several months while Mumia's last round of appeals are pending in the federal court system. You may have heard about the distribution of 15,000 "S.F. Chomicals" telling the real story about Mumia in Chronicle boxes throughout the Bay Area (150 people are rumored to have participated in this action.) On May 13, 22 people were arrested in front of Senator Dianne Feinstein's office when they blocked the "Philadelphia" streetcar to stop the railroading of Mumia.
In addition to Independence for Mumia Day on July 3, we are building for a large action during the national week of actions for Mumia at the end of September, and for an emergency response should Pennsylvania issue a death warrant for Mumia this summer.
Please ask your organization to endorse this call to direct action, and participate in the July 3 and future actions.
You can participate in the following ways:
Groups can endorse the direct action campaign and encourage your membership to participate.
Come to the next meeting of DAMAJ to help plan the procession and action: Monday May 24, 7:30 p.m., at the East Bay Community Law Center, Shattuck Ave in Berkeley near Adeline across from La Pena (call 415-431-3594 for future meetings.)
Form an affinity group to participate in this and future actions. An affinity group is a group of 5-15 people, some of whom are willing to risk arrest, who participate together and support each other during direct action and keep track of and support arrested members afterward.
Come to a prop making session: Saturday June 19 or Sunday June 13 at 2 p.m., call for locations.
Come to the pre-action gathering to get more information about the action: Saturday June 19 at 5 p.m., call for location. (If you can't come to the pre-action gathering, you can still participate in the action or help with the legal demonstration, but call.)
Help spread the word through your group's newsletter, mailing list, email list, meetings, etc. A flyer will be out soon.
For more information call 415-431-3594; or email: fireworx@igc.org.
